This guide is intended to be used as an introduction to the sources of information on the topic of reentry of ex-offenders into society. It will help you to find statutes, regulations, e-resources, useful articles, and helpful study aids. As with any research, unless you are already knowledgeable about the topic, it is best to start with introductory resources and then to go on and consult more focused works - moving from secondary to primary resources.
Reentry of ex-offenders is a wide-ranging area of research. And, as with any broad topic, unless you are already knowledgeable it is best to start with introductory resources and then consult more focused works. This means moving from secondary to primary sources.
When beginning research in the area of Reentry of Ex-Offenders, Recidivism or Collateral Consequences, secondary sources such as articles and books can provide you with an overview of your topic and help you to become aware of search terms that you might not think of otherwise. These sources will also cite primary authorities such as statutes and case law. You can use the primary sources cited in these secondary sources as a jumping off point to find more primary sources.
The TMLL catalog and/or the Discovery Service can point you to useful books and articles. The Library also subscribes to many databases that index articles in scholarly journals and other periodicals . These databases can help you begin your research. Most of the found articles will also have links to full-text.
Don't forget the "Big Three" - Lexis, Westlaw and BloombergLaw. Each offers access to a wide variety of primary and secondary sources. A password is required in order to access these databases. If you have forgotten any of your passwords, please contact a librarian for help.
