Pilot Project Information

What does Demand Driven Acquisitions mean?

Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) allows library patrons to participate in the collection development process by simply borrowing the books they’d like access to and thereby creating a demand for those titles.  The ebooks in this pilot can be accessed, borrowed, and purchased without mediation of library staff.  Decisions to permanently add a title to the collection are based on the number of times the item was borrowed.

How does the pilot work?  How is it being funded?

Librarians from the USMAI campuses have selected more than 8,000 ebooks to add to USMAI library collections for the duration of the pilot.  Once a title has been borrowed 6 times, it will be permanently added to the collection and available through all sixteen campus libraries.  None of the ebooks belong to a single campus.  Funds for this pilot project are provided by contributions from the USMAI libraries.

Where can the ebooks be found and accessed?

The ebooks are currently available through the library catalog.  Most of the books were published in 2012 and will be among the first items to appear on any results page.  To search for ebooks only, use the Advanced Search option and select E-Books in the format menu.  To access an ebook, click on the Find It button (located next to the title) and in the new window, click on the link to read full text.  eBooks can be read online using any public computer on campus, or read and downloaded to a personal computer or mobile device.

When does the pilot begin?

The pilot is currently underway and the ebooks are available for download.

Why is the Library participating in the pilot?

The Library is always striving to better meet the needs of the SMCM community and make evidence-based decisions.  We’d like to gather data on ebook usage to better inform our future purchasing and licensing decisions, while also ensuring the Library makes available the resources which are the most relevant to the curricular and research needs of the campus.
