Interlibrary Loan FAQ's
What is Illiad? ILLiad is the electronic system used to request Interlibrary Loan, Article Requests or Book Retrieval Services.
When should I use Illiad? Use ILL to request materials that are "unavailable" from libraries within the University of Maryland System of Libraries (USMAI). Unavailable items include materials that are:
- not owned by USMAI
- checked out
- at the bindery
- not on the shelf
- cannot be retrieved by the user within a reasonable amount of time.
Book Borrowing Procedures
Use the Law Library’s online catalog available on the Law Library’s homepage to borrow materials in the Law Library and other University of Maryland system libraries.
- Materials held at the Thurgood Marshall Law Library. To borrow materials held locally, bring your materials to the User Services Desk in the Law Library to check out, and use the "Managing Editor" account for your journal. Click HERE, to view a map of the Law Library and see where certain types of materials are located.
- Materials held at University of Maryland System Libraries. To borrow materials held at other University of Maryland system libraries on behalf of your Journal, please contact the User Services Desk for the UMID.
- Materials held at non-University of Maryland System Libraries. You must use Interlibrary Loan to borrow materials held at non-University of Maryland system libraries. The Interlibrary Loan system ILLiad is available from the Law Library’s home page (www.law.umaryland.edu/marshall > Quick Links > Interlibrary Loan). If you do not know your Journal’s username or password, please contact the User Services Desk. Make sure to include in the notes field of the request which Journal is requesting the item. Also, please note that we cannot ILL cover pages for journals that are otherwise available electronically.
About the Catalogs at the Library
The default catalog is "Discovery Service at UM Carey Law," a one-stop method of providing access to a wide variety of library resources including books, eBooks, eJournals, EBSCOhost and other databases all in one Google-like search box. Discovery Service complements other catalogs and research databases, including WorldCat, which allows you to search the collections of libraries worldwide, and the Law Library's Classic Catalog. All of these catalogs provide access to the holdings the Thurgood Marshall Law Library as well as that of the various libraries within the University System of Maryland. Records in the catalog provide a full description of each item, along with its subject headings, call numbers, library locations, and circulation status. The Catalog also contains current periodical receipt records and indicates which materials are on order for the library.
