The U.S. Copyright Office web page is an excellent startingpoint for researching copyright records.
There are a number of finding aids and indexes posted that can be of help to a researcher. Guide to Searching the Catalog of Copyright Entries - Records of Copyright Ownership from July 1891 to December 1977 and Guide to Searching the Copyright Office Catalog (Registrations and Recorded Documents from1978 to the Present introduce a user to the finer point of searching. There is also access to Copyright Office publications.
The Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices, 3d ed. (2014) is available on the web page in PDF format.
Indexes are a necessary part of researching Copyright Law. They enable a user to quickly and easily find sources of information. A user can search by country, topic, keywords or title. Listed below is a selected list of indexes to web pages, articles, cases and treaties.

- Index to Legal Periodicals - Indexes over 800 legal periodicals and provides full text to approximately 85% of the articles listed.
- Index to Legal Periodicals Retrospective: 1908-1981 - This retrospective index supplies citations to over 750 legal periodicals.
- LegalTrac - Indexes over 1,400 titles which include law reviews, legal newspapers, and bar association journals. Coverage is 1980 to the present.
