Book Borrowing Procedures

Use the Law Library’s online catalog available on the Law Library’s homepage to borrow materials in the Law Library, other University of Maryland system libraries, and libraries around the world.

·   Materials held at the Thurgood Marshall Law Library. To borrow materials held locally, bring your materials to the User Services Desk in the Law Library to check out, along with your OneCard.

·   Materials held at University of Maryland System Libraries.  To borrow materials held at other University of Maryland system libraries on behalf of your professor, please contact the User Services Desk.

·   Materials held at non-University of Maryland System Libraries.  You must use Interlibrary Loan to borrow materials held at non-University of Maryland system libraries.  The Interlibrary Loan system ILLiad is available from the Law Library’s home page (www.law.umaryland.edu/marshall > Quick Links > Interlibrary Loan).  To use ILLiad, first register with a user name and password.  Make sure to include in the notes field of the request which Professor is requesting the item.

 

Interlibrary Loan FAQ's

What is Illiad?  ILLiad is the electronic system used to request Interlibrary Loan, Article Requests or Book Retrieval Services.

Who can use Illiad?  Eligible users of Interlibrary Loan Service include currently enrolled or employed UMD faculty, staff & students

How can I request an item?  To request an item using ILLiad, you must first register on our First Time Users Registration Page. Due to authentication purposes, patrons must provide their University of Maryland email account information in order to request items via ILLiad.  You will then be logged into ILLiad where you can enter your request information in the appropriate web form.

When should I use Illiad?  Use ILL to request materials that are "unavailable" from libraries within the University of Maryland System of Libraries (USMAI).  Unavailable items include materials that are:

  • not owned by USMAI
  • checked out
  • at the bindery
  • missing
  • lost
  • not on the shelf
  • cannot be retrieved by the user within a reasonable amount of time.
